Nakoda on the Lake is located aminutes from Kananaskis Country which is located in  the front ranges of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and offers a mosaic of habitats, ranging from subalpine forests, to wetlands to alpine meadows.

These habitats provide mountain homes for a wide array of plants and animals. In shaded lodgepole pine forests one may find calypso orchids, heart-leaved arnicas, delicate twinflowers, an assortment of wintergreen flowers, and bunchberry. On more open slopes, thick mats of bearberry cover the ground. In wet meadows one may see white camas, bracted lousewort, and elephanthead. Above treeline, alpine flowers cover the meadows with a riot of colour. Indian paintbrush, glacier lilies, western anemones, alpine forget-me-nots, and rock jasmine not only survive, but thrive in the harsh climate of the high alpine.

Approximately 130 species of birds nest in Kananaskis Country. The friendly Gray Jay will be sure to greet every visitor to the park. Along with the more familiar raven and Crow and Ravens, visitors may see grouse, woodpeckers, and a host of songbirds from warblers and thrushes, to dippers and even hummingbirds. Their songs may be what most people experience however, with birds like the ruby-crowned kinglet singing from the tops of trees during the day while the spiralling song of the Swainson’s thrush echoes in the early evening hours. Many birds of prey nest in the area including the goshawk, red-tailed hawk, osprey, and golden and bald eagle.

The most common mammals you’ll see in and around the lodge and trails are the red squirrel, Columbian Ground Squirrel, Least Chipmunk, and Golden-mantled ground squirrel. A leisurely drive through the park and area at dawn or dusk is a good time to spot some of the larger animals such as Moose, Deer, or Elk.  Bighorn sheep can often be seen on a summer’s day licking salt on and alongside the highway.

Please watch your speed!

A wide variety of small and large animals call Kananaskis Country home, such as the pine marten, three species of weasel, lynx, cougar, wolf, coyote, grizzly bear, black bear, and wolverine. Sightings of any of our elusive carnivores are rare indeed. An exception is the coyote which is more common and can sometimes be seen travelling along roadsides.

For their safety… and yours, view all wildlife from a distance. And please, don’t feed any wildlife. The Park Visitor Centre has knowledgeable, friendly staff and an array of interactive displays to help visitors learn more about the plants and animals of the area. Various guides and checklists may also be purchased at the Visitor Centre. Or, learn more about the park’s wildlife at an entertaining interpretive program in one of the park’s amphitheatres.

Making the most of the natural landscape, he wove the course around majestic evergreens, in the shadow of the mountains and along the banks of two rivers. In 1989, 9 holes were added, resulting in 27 holes of championship layout. Recently the course has been fully restored back to the original Stanley Thompson design with modifications for today's long drive technology. It is common to be playing along side some magnificent elk.  Located about 50 minutes from the lodge.  Telephone: 403-762-6801

On the Trail  The corporate workshops that have been developed by “On the Trail” focus on Team Building and Leadership Development. Our facilitators work with corporate groups in an experiential setting where the participants are presented with a variety of challenges that are designed to be solved with the assistance of certified Search & Rescue dogs and handlers. The challenges take on the form of rescue/find scenarios as well as a range of problem solving tasks. The dynamics that appear through the work with the dogs have an extra quality to them, that is often lacking in other settings. Just the simple fact that participants have to cooperate with and rely on such an “unknown” entity as a working dog opens up possibilities of engagement and levels of participation that surprise everyone involved.

Canoeing on Chief Hector Lake

Lake Chief Hector was named for the late Chief Hector Crawler of the Chiniquay Band.

Enjoy the serenity of Lake Chief Hector from a canoe or kayak - you are welcome to bring your own or canoe rentals are available from the lodge.  Life jackets are included in rental and are mandatory on the lake.

Canoe Rentals are available at Nakoda Lodge for $25 per hour. Please inquire at the Front Desk.

Fishing on Chief Hector Lake

Chief Hector Lake provides outstanding fishing. The lake is privately owned and a day license is required for all fishermen. Catch-and-release fishing applies.

Fishing Licenses are sold at the Front Desk at Nakoda on the Lake. Cost is $25 per day per person/rod. Children under 12 are free.

Some of the nearby lakes and rivers that will entice boaters and fishers of all sorts including Ice Fishing enthusiasts are:

  • The Bow River
  • Lake Minnewanka (Banff National Park)
  • Spray Lakes
  • Ghost Reservoir
  • Lac Des Arcs
  • Barrier Lake
  • Goat Pond
  • Gap Lake
  • Vermillion Lakes (Banff National Park)

For the above most locals practice catch and release, and some species (like the bull trout in the Bow River) the fish must be set free in order to maintain the population. It's always a good idea to check the regulations before heading to the water. To find out about what flies are hatching, and what the fish are biting on - a visit to the local fly shop is a must.

Local outfitters will lead the way to where the fish are. A variety of trip lengths will satisfy every fisher - half-day to multi-day trips are easily available from Canmore's guides. Lessons will help get beginners into the rhythm before taking to the river. A common sight at the local fly shop in summer is watching new fly fishers casting on the lawn.
