Whitewater Rafting

And of course, the very popular Whitewater Rafting offered by Chinook Rafting, located right on the grounds of The Nakoda Lodge. This wet, fun filled adventure offers everything from peaceful, tranquil floats to high energy, high excitement rafting experiences. You choose your adventure level!

Fishing on Chief Hector Lake

Chief Hector Lake provides outstanding fishing. The lake has been stocked with two thousand Rainbow Trouts of assorted sizes (minimum 14 inches) on June 15, 2008. The lake is privately owned and a day license is required for all fishermen. Catch-and-release fishing applies.

Fishing Licenses are sold at the Front Desk at Nakoda Lodge. Cost is $25 per day per person/rod. Children under 12 are free.

Some of the nearby lakes and rivers that will entice boaters and fishers of all sorts including Ice Fishing enthusiasts are:

  • The Bow River
  • Lake Minnewanka (Banff National Park)
  • Spray Lakes
  • Ghost Reservoir
  • Lac Des Arcs
  • Barrier Lake
  • Goat Pond
  • Gap Lake
  • Vermillion Lakes (Banff National Park)

Most locals here practice catch and release, and with some species (like the bull trout in the Bow River) the fish must be set free in order to maintain the population. It's always a good idea to check the regulations before heading to the water. To find out about what flies are hatching, and what the fish are biting on - a visit to the local fly shop is a must.

Local outfitters will lead the way to where the fish are. A variety of trip lengths will satisfy every fisher - half-day to multi-day trips are easily available from Canmore's guides. Lessons will help get beginners into the rhythm before taking to the river. A common sight at the local fly shop in summer is watching new fly fishers casting on the lawn.
